Wash Care Tips: Keeping Your Finds Looking Fresh Longer
How you wash your clothes matters as much as what you buy. Our care notes help extend the life of every item.

Why Care Instructions Vary
The same wash routine can ruin one item and refresh another. Fabric blends, print methods, and stitching types all react differently to heat, agitation, and detergent. Our Fishgoo Finds include a care note column with specific recommendations for each item. These are not generic labels. They are based on how the item behaves in real washing tests and community feedback over time.
For example, a heavyweight cotton hoodie with a screen print might handle warm water fine, while a lightweight modal tee with a DTG print might fade faster under the same conditions. By following the care note for each item, you reduce shrinkage, preserve color, and keep prints intact for longer.
Water hardness also affects wash results. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on fabric that make colors look dull and feel stiff. If you live in a hard water area, adding a water softener to your wash cycle can improve results across all items. Our care notes assume standard water conditions but mention when an item is especially sensitive to mineral buildup.
Wash Day Best Practice
Step 1
Sort by Color & Fabric
Separate darks, lights, and delicates to prevent color bleed and damage.
Step 2
Turn Inside Out
Protect prints, reduce surface abrasion, and preserve color depth.
Step 3
Cold Water + Mild Detergent
Use the gentlest effective cycle and detergent for the fabric type.
Step 4
Air Dry or Low Heat
Hang or lay flat when possible. Machine dry on low only when necessary.
General Rules That Help Everyone
Cold water is the safest default for almost everything in our sheets. It reduces color bleed, minimizes shrinkage, and is gentler on prints. Air drying is better than machine drying for longevity, especially for items with elastic, prints, or delicate stitching. If you must machine dry, use the lowest heat setting and remove items while slightly damp to finish air drying.
Turning items inside out before washing protects prints and reduces surface abrasion on outer fabrics. Using a mesh laundry bag for items with zippers, drawstrings, or hardware prevents snags. These habits take almost no extra time but significantly extend the usable life of your wardrobe.
Detergent choice matters more than people realize. Heavy-duty detergents with enzymes are great for dirty work clothes but can degrade delicate fibers over time. A mild, pH-neutral detergent is better for most fashion items. Our care notes specify when an item benefits from enzyme-free detergent or when a stain-fighting formula is safe to use.
Denim Secret
Wash jeans inside out in cold water and never machine dry them. This preserves the dye and prevents the knees from stretching out. A good pair of jeans can last years with this simple routine.
Category-Specific Care Notes
Different categories need different care. Denim should be washed infrequently and inside out to preserve color. Knitwear should be laid flat to dry to prevent stretching. Leather and suede need specialized cleaners rather than regular detergent. Our Fishgoo Spreadsheet includes category-specific care tags so you do not treat all items the same.
For items with mixed materials, like a jacket with leather sleeves and a cotton body, follow the care instructions for the most delicate component. In this case, that means avoiding machine washing entirely and spot cleaning instead. Our mixed material notes flag these items so you know upfront that they need extra attention.
