Sizing for Athletic Builds: What the Spreadsheet Adjusts
Broad shoulders and larger thighs need different sizing rules. Here is how we adapt our notes for athletic frames.

Shoulder and Chest Adjustments
Athletic builds often have shoulders and chests that are proportionally larger than the waist. Standard size charts assume a more uniform ratio, which means an athletic buyer might find the shoulders tight before the waist even fits. Our Fishgoo Spreadsheet adds a shoulder width note and chest width note for items where this matters. We also flag items with stretch panels or relaxed shoulders that accommodate broader frames better.
For tops, we recommend starting with the shoulder measurement rather than the labeled size. If your shoulder width is twenty inches, look for items with a shoulder seam at or above that number. Then check the chest and waist to make sure the rest of the piece is not excessively baggy. This top-down approach works better for athletic builds than following the generic size chart alone.
Stretch fabric is a game changer for athletic builds. A cotton tee with five percent elastane can fit a forty six inch chest without looking boxy at the waist. Our spreadsheet notes fabric composition and stretch percentage when available, so you can prioritize items that will conform to your shape rather than fighting against it.
Fit Strategy by Build
Athletic Top
Prioritize shoulder width, then chest, then stretch fabric
Athletic Bottom
Prioritize thigh width, then seat room, then taper
Layering
Choose lightweight layers and generous outerwear cuts
Thigh and Seat Room in Bottoms
Pants sizing for athletic legs follows a similar logic. Thigh circumference is the bottleneck measurement. If the thigh is too tight, the pant will pull at the crotch and restrict movement even if the waist fits perfectly. Our spreadsheet includes a thigh width column for pants and shorts, measured at the widest point of the upper leg.
We also note the seat room, which is the fabric allowance across the hips and backside. Some athletic builds need extra seat room to avoid tension lines when sitting or bending. Items tagged as athletic fit or relaxed taper usually offer more room in these areas without ballooning at the ankle.
For shorts, thigh room is even more critical because there is no fabric below the knee to balance the silhouette. A tight thigh on shorts looks constricting and uncomfortable. Our Fishgoo Finds recommend sizing up or choosing relaxed fit shorts for athletic thighs, even if the waist requires a belt.

Layering for Athletic Frames
Layering adds complexity for athletic builds because each layer needs to accommodate the same broad measurements. A tight base layer under a slim jacket will bunch and restrict movement. Our spreadsheet notes which outerwear items are cut generously enough to layer over thicker tops.
We also recommend fabric weights for layering. Lightweight layers add less bulk and stack more comfortably. A two hundred GSM tee under a three hundred GSM hoodie under a six hundred GSM jacket creates a manageable stack. Replacing that tee with a four hundred GSM heavyweight tee might make the stack unwieldy. Our weight notes help you plan layered outfits that work for your frame.
